Driving license
Just like any other country, in order to drive in Uganda, you must have a valid driving permit or an international driver’s license from your home country. This will certify that you have the driving experience and are capable of operating a vehicle on the road.
Speed Limit
Another crucial thing to note among the traffic laws in Uganda is the speed limit. While driving in a busy town, you should not exceed 50km/hr., on high ways the speed limit is 80km/hr and in protected places such as national parks, you should not exceed 40km/hr.
Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol
It is very obvious that while drunk, you cannot safely drive. In order to ensure your safety and other road users, you are advised not to drink at all if you are to drive.
Avoid using the phone while driving
Since the phone is capable of taking your full attention, you are highly advised to put it away while driving. It is very illegal in Uganda to drive while talking in phone, replying messages or even surfing. In case you receive a phone call, kindly park aside and answer it and after continue with your journey.
Mind to tighten your seat belt
While on the road, remember to tighten your seat belt for safety in case of an accident. This will safeguard you in case of an accident. Whenever you are renting a car in Uganda, ensure that all the seat belts are perfectly working.
Read the Road signs
While driving in Uganda, make sure you read the road signs carefully and respond to them with effect. There are many road signs on Ugandan roads each with a different meaning.
How is it like to drive in Uganda?
While on a self drive in Uganda especially in Kampala, the capital city is a very rewarding experience however it needs a high level of patience. Roads in the city are mostly filled with motorcyclists who are always passing by the sides of cars in the city. While driving in Kampala, get ready for tight traffic jam therefore you must be very kin and steady for instant braking.
When you get out of the capital city, driving will probably be more friendly provided you abide by the traffic laws in Uganda more so follow and respect the speed limits.
